Facing bricks can be rectangular or square, in which case they are called perforated blocks. They are made by extrusion, or by pressing in the case of solid bricks.
The perforations of such bricks and perforated blocks are generally perpendicular to the surface on which they are laid.
These products must conform to French standard :
NF P 13-304 "Facing clay bricks",
NF P 13-306 "Facing perforated clay blocks".
Their use is regulated by French standard NF P 10-202 "Small masonry wall units". However, in order to obtain a watertight wall of satisfactory appearance, special care is recommended in the laying of these bricks; particular attention should be paid to the fitting of joints and use of an appropriate mortar..
