Clay tiles can be used to make roof coverings and claddings. There are three major categories of roofing tiles:
curved tiles,
plain tiles,
interlocking tiles ; The latter category can be divided into two groups according to profile :
- flat interlocking tiles
- sliding interlocking tiles
To obtain a satisfactory roof covering, good quality roofing tile must be used and proper installation techniques applied.
The "NF" (Norme Française) quality label identifies products which have been certified in conformity with French national standards.
The characteristics of curved tiles, plain tiles and interlocking tiles must conform to French/European standard NF EN 1304 "Clay roofing tiles for discontinuous laying".
Their use is regulated by:
French standard NF P 31.201: "Roof covering made from hollow terra cotta tiles."
French standard NF P 31.202: "Roof covering made of slipping or grooved clay tiles."
French standard NF P 31.203: "Roof covering made of clay flat interlocking tiles."
French standard NF P 31.204: "Roof covering made of plain clay roofing tiles."
